See my blog for a walkthrough of this: [link]

"Thus [Fingolfin] came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth in single combat. And Morgoth came.

That was the last time in those wars that he passed the doors of his stronghold, and it is said that he took not the challenge willingly; for though his might was greatest of all things in the world, alone of the Valar he knew fear."

J. R. R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion

Watercolour on cold press paper.

Another commission for :iconmelyanna:, companion piece to Thanks so much for your patience during the last months!

Edit: Back to its original title. O cruel blow of fate, for a picture with "to come" in the title to end up on the front page amidst wide-spread vaginas and huge fake bouncing boobs. Seriously, I teach secondary school and thought I could risk it. It's official now though: dA front page clientèle is more juvenile than a bunch of sixth graders.

This is precisely how I pictured Morgoth.

Middle Earth's first Lord of Darkness looks magnificent. And that's Grond in his hand, right?

This is great ! It is, even after seeing this piece so many times, the first time I notice some of the details of the armor. The engravings on the chest really seem a pair of eyes looking down on you, and the composition itself has an almost cold, mineral aspect to it.

I was reading Silmarillion today, and read this scene. It was amazing, I'd never heard of this duel before! Fingolfin was quite a warrior, challenging Morgoth and severely wounding him seven times, not to mention crippling his leg!

Excellent work, you did well drawing something like a face to him, yet keeping it shady to give a feeling of him being dark, otherworldly being.

One has to know fear to spread fear. But then again he did spend most of his power on corrupting Creation so much so that he feared the Elf-lord's prowess. Great interpretation of Morgoth Bauglir!
