It was high time for a new tutorial - so here it is!

Technique: Digital colouring and painting
Programme: Photoshop 6 (graphics tablet recommended)
Techniques: Shading, lighting, creating custom brushes
Experience with digital media: Intermediate recommended. I don't explain the most basic of the basics in this one.

Please note: I still paint in Photoshop 6; a lot of things are probably different in newer versions, but most of what I explain here will (hopefully) go for more recent version too.

Disclaimer: This is not the only way to colour, it's probably not even the best way to colour, but it's the way I colour. ;)

Enjoy! :)

Hey, thanks. I have been looking for something that says more about base colors and how to move from them for a while and this one is the best thus far!

so, for the first part, you draw a picture on paper, then put the finished picture into a printer, scan it into the computer, than use photoshop to color it?

That's the way I used to do it, yes. I can't draw on the computer. :) Today, I'm back to using traditional media for all my steps.

I love this, thank you so much! I like the rough look of pencil lineart, too, and I could never figure out a way to keep it and still get some coloring in (my worst fear, lol) without resorting to digital inking first. Can't wait to try out the tips in this tutorial myself, thanks again!

-sigh- I still need to learn how to use Photoshop... I'm a total neophyte in that area.

I love how you start a picture knowing what you want to do and where you want to get to. It makes everything SO much easier.

You are an amazing artist. My respects and congratulations on your formidable talent.

I'd say that's a vast portion of all there is to any kind of art. Funnily, I see this in my kids. One of them isn't very talented; still doing a circle for the head and a block for the body and five single sausages for fingers. The other draws the silhouette of everything before fleshing out - plainly seeing what the final result is going to be.

Yeah... although that doesn't mean necessarily that they can't achieve the same level of proficiency; it only means one has to work harder to get where the other gets by instict. Good to know your kids are picking up on their mom's enormous talent!

When you used your custom brush on the background trees, did you use a large size for some of the texture, and then a smaller size to paint the shapes of the trees?

No; in Photoshop 6. you can't make custom brushes smaller ;)

This was really helpful! I really like it when artists infuse a little bit of colour theory into their tutorials, instead of just explaining what brushes they use and the like. But not so much that it sounds like a textbook, which I've seen as well, heh. You've got a nice balance of techniques and theory, I like it. I'll have to keep the lighting tips you've given in mind. :)

And don't worry, even with CS5, this is still current. ;) The only difference I could spot was that when you try to erase on a transparency locked layer in CS5, it doesn't erase to white, it erases to whatever background colour you have selected. But that's obviously a tiny detail that doesn't matter much at all. XD
