Fingolfin's Challenge by Gold-Seven Fingolfin's Challenge by Gold-Seven
"His hopeless challenge dauntless cried
Fingolfin there: "Come, open wide,
dark king, your ghastly brazen doors!
Come forth, whom earth and heaven abhors!
Come forth, O monstrous craven lord,
and fight with thine own hand and sword,
thou wielder of hosts of banded thralls,
thou tyrant leaguered with strong walls,
thou foe of Gods and elvish race!
I wait thee here. Come! Show thy face!"

J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lays of Beleriand/The Silmarillion

While I'm not entirely sold on your depiction of the High King's armour, I do love your depiction of the King himself, Ringil and Rochollor (particularly the noble steed, who looks fit to ride over ring wraiths!).

I just wanted to let you know that I put this in an art feature in my group :iconrealmsoffantasy-myth: , in the article "Realms of Fantasy and Myth: Finale - Tokien's Legacy".  You can find it here: realmsoffantasy-myth.deviantar…  ^_^

This is beautiful :D  I have a question.. do you use reference pics for the poses of the characters or just invent them? :)

I only use reference in about 10% of all cases. For horses, I usually do; as for this one. For people, only when I want weird poses or tough angles.

No problem. Most people use the two synonymously and don't even know Tolkien wrote more, so, kudos! ;)

Thank you ;) That's true, and it's a shame really :/ I love most of Tolkien's writing. My favorite is Silmarillion- everything is so beautifully described. :)

Okey, thank you for answering :) I was just wondering, cos I usually make up the poses for people myself, so I was curious :) I do use references for horses too though. I really love your Lord Of The Rings art

You don't like Blind Guardian? I think they make a pill that'll clear that right up. :P

In all seriousness, excellent art. I'm just having to restrain myself from favouriting everything.

Waw ! Being a french-speaker, I'll try to express myself in English... because I find your art such a masterpiece.
When I first read The Silmarillion, this exact moment was my favourite one. I was - and still am - really impressed by the power and heroic strength of Fingolfin. I was about to cry ; shaken by his hopeless fight, the conjuction between the oath of FŽanor, the fear and their ineluctable fate. Your art communicates this emotion, with all the details. I love it.
Thank you so much for sharing this.

I cried so hard when Fingolfin died fighting Morgoth - for a second at the end, I thought he'd live ... but he didn't.
This artwork brings me back so much memories - I love it :)

Heart of Courage? Hm... Not bad. But I'll go for Time stand still (at the Iron Hill) by the german band Blind Guardian. Y'know... Since it tells Fingolfin's story in power metal. ;)

"He gleams like a star
And the sound of his horn's
Like a raging storm
Proudly the high lord
Challenges the doom
Lord of slaves he cries"

Also: as always your work stuns me. Damnit, you're turning me into a fanboi. X)

Ah, sorry, but no. I've never understand how anyone (least of all so many) can find Heavy Metal an appropriate match for Tolkien. ;) I guess I'm the odd one out there.

I think it's because a LOT of people in certain subcultures like both Tolkien and Metal, and then the two merge leading to bands like BG. It's not that it's an appropriate match in itself, but that it's a natural evolution due to a large overlap in the fanbases.

And if you don't like either Tolkien or Metal, then you're suddenly left out. ;)

Funny thing. Both you and Blind Guardian are german. (No, I don't think that's a contributing factor, but _I_ am a fan of both. ;) )

Well, they have some weird pronounciations and stresses the wrong syllables at times. But that's not uncommon among non english speaking metal bands. I've kinda gotten used to it. XD
