Fingon by Gold-Seven Fingon by Gold-Seven
"He sought not his own, neither power nor glory, and death was his reward."

Gorgeous Fingon is gorgeous. He's probably the character whose design has undergone the greatest change in eighteen years. Including hair colour and -style, lol. (I was already debating to click the "mature content" for Maedhros. This one probably should have the tag. :D)

Winsor/Newton watercolours on Moleskine sketchbook. This one drawn at school. (In a free period, of course!)

I'm loving this Silmarillion rampage... I might be bold enough to attempt a full painting soon. The poppy is coming out among the yarrow everywhere in the fields around where I live. It always makes me want to paint.

I must admit that I'm as impressed by your rendition of Fingon as by your depiction of his father (it may become apparent that The House of Fingolfin is my favourite, which you might blame on a youth spent reading 'The Mark of the Horse Lord' amongst other things); he's very much the Young Lion following in some mighty footsteps and threatening to outpace them with his foot speed!

 ...

Alright, I admit it, he's EXTREMELY pretty (in fact your Elves tend to to be; it seems that Celegorm the Fair would have to work EXTREMELY hard to maintain his title in this family!).

It's hard not to give the greatest beauty to a character described as "He sought not his own, neither power nor glory, and death was his reward." That's Galahad-esque, that is.

Now that's an interesting point (although given that Fingon was involved in the Kin-Slaying at the Swan-Ship havens it's easier to think of him as Gawain, rather than Galahad - although when it comes to comparing peerless warriors cursed with pain-in-the-neck families Maedhros trumps Fingon - perhaps Lancelot would make for an even better comparison instead?).

All comparisons are going to be skewed in some way, but it's interesting that I - and many others, doubtlessly Tolkien too when he wrote those lines - forget that Fingon took part in the kinslaying!

Admittedly part of the fun of Middle-Earth is that it's more like reading a genuine mythic cycle than a novel; there are all sorts of divergent traditions, possible interpretations and simple lack of details leading to wildly differing mental images!

For example witness this depiction of Fingolfin and Maedhros drawn up by a correspondent of mine; very different from your own, but I would argue as good and equally-plausible (allowing for a certain degree of argument between schools of thought):

 www.deviantart.com/art/Maedhro…

Part of the fun of deviantART is seeing where depictions of a character by different artists diverge and where they resemble one another (I'm particularly fond of finding images by different artists that are still similar enough to be paired together to form miniature 'Story Boards' although I won't weary you with examples unless you are interested enough to ask for one).

Thank you very kindly, by the way, for taking time to answer my comments and compliments with such patience.:) (Smile)

That's how Fingon should look - definitely my favorite Elf in the Silmarillion.

The closer in one gets to this one the more gorgeous he is. He, along, with Maedhros among the top two of my favorite Silmarillion characters. You have done them justice in this series!
