Forgiveness by Gold-Seven Forgiveness by Gold-Seven
Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you
Make the most of all you still have coming to you
Lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you
Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on your knees

Let me live again, let life come find me wanting
Spring must strike again against the shield of winter
Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me
Telling me the danger’s past, I need not fear the icy blast again

(Genesis, Undertow)

Maedhros, released from the Hall of Mandos, meets his mother again in Valinor. For the right sort of sad viewing experience, play that Genesis song along with the image. I did that yesterday and it actually made me tear up.

Sketches, lineart, detail shots, ramblings on my blog: [link]

(From J. R. R. Tolkien's Silmarillion... not directly though.)

Mixed media (coffee, watercolour, gouache) on Canson watercolour paper.

Note to Game of Thrones Fans
This one's circulating on the net as "Reunion of Sansa and Arya". I have absolutely no idea how this happened, as these are clearly two red-haired people, one of whom is clearly male.
Already people are asking me why I depict Arya as red-haired, and what the heck she's begging forgiveness for.

Lesson learnt: Don't rip art out of context.

I think that I've found out what is so moving to me about this painting. I love the coloration of the coffee, and the muted contrast of their red hair against everything else; I adore the lyrics that you've picked to accompany this piece, and the way that song and painting almost seem to speak to each other; the body language of both Nerdanel and her son break my heart in the best of ways. But what's most moving, to me, is the thought that Maedhros the Tall, who would not kneel before the Oath, would not kneel before the Doom of his people, would not kneel before the Valar themselves - that he would kneel and beg forgiveness before his Amme.

I feel like i should reread The Silmarrillion while looking at your paintings. They remind me of sttained glass windows at a church.

(his hand is return!) Very sad and yet hopeful in a sense. The choice of the coffee is a very good one, it gives perfect colors for this scene.

People are weird. This looks nothing like anything AsoIaF. :iconfacepalmplz:

The subtle lighting and the background are just gorgeous. I have a great weakness for leaves falling through sunbeams. :D

In defense of ASOIAF fans (I am one <.<;;), Arya is not particularly feminine. However, as I have read all the books, I know enough that interpreting this piece that way makes zero sense. It's a wonderful piece, though! :)

I did as you say... and now I'm crying. This is just too touching-sad for words. Maedhros had always been my absolute favorite amidst the Feänorion. And as Kingsdaughter613 said, he deserved this moment.

Their poses are just perfect - and Maedhros's body-language speaks both of pain and relief, in a way that is nearly overwhelming. And Nerdanel... She is so contained, though it seems to me that she is just this close to go and embrace her son. And tell him he did all he could and that it'll all be fine now. :bawling:

He deserves this moment... Its so heartbreaking and so touching... Of all the brothers I think I feel sorriest for Maedhros, Maglor and the twins Amrod and Amras. Driven by their vows, doomed for all eternity...

As I look upon this beautiful, beautiful work of art, whilst listening to the song that inspired it, a lone tear runs down my cheek. It is the tear that I could no longer contain inside my eyes. I could go on and on about how beautiful this looks, how wonderful the colors are, how well you draw and how heartbreaking Maedhros position is, but I'm not going to. I don't need to. You know how simply sublime your work is, and so do I. I just know that the last time I cried was when my granfather died seven years ago, and since then I've never cried like this, until now. I think that enough is said.
