A conceptual sketch for a project is putting together: He's actually doing a stop motion movie project of the battle of Fingolfin and Morgoth, and I jumped on board to help out with concept art, first for the exteriors. I'm really excited about the project. We talked about what the entrance to Angband might look like - such as the great pits lining the way, that are described when Beren and Lúthien make their way towards the gates - and the gate itself. We debated Balrog statues, but in my head, they looked too tame.
Imagine being led through those gates as a prisoner, looking up to grotesque, twisted, tormented shapes above you, wondering what fate awaits you there.
Pencil on pastel paper (my sketchbook, yay.)
Got a new painting of Fëanor coming up too, by the way. See here for a sneak peek. [link]
