"Maedhros was ambushed, and all his company was slain, but he himself was taken alive by the command of Morgoth, and taken to Angband."
J. R. R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion

I think I will actually draw Maedhros with long hair prior to his captivity from now on. Even drawing this scene has moved me rather deeply. It must be the ultimate humiliation for an elf to have his beautiful hair cut off.

An actual watercolour for once--digital help only to turn the colours into what they were before I scanned. And my scanner seemed to think I was still working in black and white. It only recognized a bit of the red. I have to break it in slowly. *kicks it*

Full view please! ^__^ The original is 12x16 inches!

Wow, I totally overlooked that. Does it remind anyone else of aslan from narnia?

Actually, the orcs cutting Maehdros' hair has been my headcanon for a while, so... well. You represented it very well.

I've been looking around your gallery and admiring your art for quite a while now. I discovered it before I had read Silmarillion and now that I have read it, I love your pictures even more for the closeness I feel with the characters and stories, instead of just for the artistic skill and glorious detail you're seemingly able to put into everything you draw:) I also think your use of watercolour and other softly coloured mediums fits wonderfully well with Tolkien's universe and your pictures always make me think of Alan Lee's beautiful illustrations, which is a pleasure:D
I hope you wouldn't mind if I watch you?:)

It's hard to remember everything that went down in that book after reading just once, but this is one of the more memorable stories. Lovely work.

You know, I totally put this one in my favorites ages ago, but apparently I never commented on it. So, allow me to say that the idea about Maedhros' hair - it being all pretty and long, the bad guys chopping it off as a humiliation, and his keeping it short ever after as a reminder of sorts - is one of the cleverest things I think you've come up with. I love the idea so much that it will never cease to be canon in my head.

This piece feels less "finished" or clean than your usual style, but I really like it. The emotions are quite strong, and it's pretty much effective in every way. So, yeah.

Plus: you never draw orcs. XD I especially like the one in the foreground, because it's like he heard the viewer behind him and is turning to demand what we're doing there.

he had dark hair, shorter then most, without plates, he and the other mirkwood elves were wearing rougher clothes, black, embroidered but almost like they were tattered.

Legolas had a short bow and still had a couple of short blades or long knives. I haven't read all of Tolkien's books but the mirkwood elves are wild elves no? They didn't look as stately as the elves of Rivendell or Lorien.

But ja, i saw it in a book in my school library, the elves in the pictures, the different elfish ... um... groups, societies.. i don't know the word...they had a lot more distinction in their looks.

:D And i shall stop before i ramble on for an eternity that ends with a sharp punch to my face.

I just have to say, all your Tolkien works have inspired and motivated me to finally read the Silmarillion. Being a Lord of the Rings fan, it always bugged me that I hadn't yet, but now it's the very next on the short list. So thanks for that!

The emotion in these pics is fantastic!

I love this too. In a sad way, which I guess is the right emotion, so yay for effectiveness.

I have always seen elves with long hair, because, well, I don't think an elf would have bothered to keep their hair short. They would have to constantly cut it....for thousands and thousands of years. Endlessly. I love short hair but I bet I would give it up and let it grow as it will after maybe a century. Probably less. Plus, if it's naturally clean and silky, why not just let it flow and have it be a sign of higher grace and beauty? That's why I can't see any elf keeping short hair for an extended period of time, even as a message, but hey, just me.

But back to the picture..it's simply beautiful. And I see your points perfectly. Well done you!

Yes! You've proved you don't need digital colouring to get astonishing pictures! I rather prefer this to watercolour+photoshop pictures. I like them both, of course, and it's just a personal preference, nothing against those devoted to digital art.
