A tattoo design commission for :iconraynee:, who requested Jeanne d'Arc (1412-1431), a historical figure I've always loved. (Determination against terrible odds and a tragic end. I always fall for those.)

Pencil; background texture from free stock site. Her armour is based on several pieces of plate armour between 1420 and 1430 found in "Historische Waffen und Rüstungen" by Liliane and Fred Funcken, my new can't-do-without reference book.

Actually they were. Like I said, in this case the women took up arms and defeated the moors themselves and they earned the same social standards whereas the Count in charge of their home was basically wowed by their performance :)

In fact female knights of the warrior variety existed in several countries and mixed-gender order were not uncommon. Female knights were granted the same rights, privileges and esteem as their male counterparts. Female knights were also supposedly valued MORE than male knights, simply because as you can imagine such a thing was rare.

The Order of the glorious Saint Mary was even approved of by the at the time Pope

Several actual female knights existed until the stricter Catholic church (or rather the fanatic behind it) started the whole 'women who wear male clothing commit sin'. Which was about a few hundred years later. It's actually somewhat sad really.

Even the Knights Templar of all order had an entire division of female warrior knights. They were burned to death of course...

Huch ;) Die Päpstin in umgekehrt?

If she finds a good tattoo artist this will look fabulous.
It would be nice to see it done in skin :)
