Just in time! :faint: My Christmas present for my Mum (which I started almost three months ago). It's from her (and my) favourite of Grimm's fairytales: Jorinde und Joringel.

Jorinde and her beloved Joringel are about to marry, and go for a walk in a nearby forest. In this forest, however, there dwells an evil sorceress who turns into an owl at night and turns people to stone, but young maidens she turns into birds and takes them off into her tower.

After Jorinde and Joringel have walked in the forest for a while, suddenly a great sadness falls over them and Jorinde begins to sing:

"Mein Vöglein mit dem Ringlein rot
singt Leide, Leide, Leide.
Es singt dem Täubelein seinen Tod,
singt Leide, Lei - zicküth, zicküth, zicküth."

("My birdie with her ring so red
Sings sorrow, sorrow, sorrow.
My love will mourn when I am dead
Tomorrow, morrow, mor- jug, jug, jug.")

When Joringel turns around to her, he sees that Jorinde has turned into a nightingale, and an owl with red-glowing eyes flies about her, and turns into the sorceress, who catches the nightingale in a cage and disappears with her. Joringel cannot move.

He then dreams of a red flower with a pearl in its midst, and after searching day and night, he finally finds it. With this flower, the sorceress cannot harm him as he enters her tower and frees all the enchanted birds, and finds his Jorinde.

Watercolour. The style of the picture is inspired by Russian painter Ivan Bilibin, who illustrated the Russian folk tales. [link]

Wonderful! I love the owl most! :)

I have read that fairytale. Ages ago although, I do remember really liking it... I should go find a book or somewhere where it's written and read it again....

Really nice illustration. The girls arms becoming wings looks really nice and not at all akward. Very cool. :+fav:

Good Morning Starshine, the earth says 'Hello'!

It's one of the most melancholic fairytales I know. And I like very much. Do you know the movie? In my opinion it's one of the best fairytale movies.

The "Brothers Grimm" one? We saw it this autumn and I really liked it aesthetically, and Matt Damon and Heath Ledger were fun - but I did think it was a bit too Hollywoodised. Even in the German version, they called each other "Jake" and "Will".

Chaucer: You've probably read my book? The Book of the Duchess? No? Well, it was allegorical.
Roland: Well, we won't hold that against you, that's for every man to decide for himself. (A Knight's Tale)

Gorgeous! I especially love the splash of blue at the center, it really focusses the image. Lovely forest, too! =)
I haven't come across that fairy tale, even though I have many books full of them (I love fairytales) so it was also interesting to hear about this one. I'll have to keep an eye out for it! =)

As inbcredible as always, Jenny, absolutely lovely! :) And the combination of colours is great!

You might find after a time, that having is not nearly as fine a thing as wanting. (Spock)
