Artist's Comments

Maedhros, after his capture by Orcs and Balrogs, is brought before the Deep Throne of Morgoth - so close to the Silmarils and yet so far... and unaware yet of the fate that awaits him.

Not an actual scene from the Silmarillion, but Morgoth couldn't have passed over the opportunity to gloat. Drawn for Anna, for whom I've already done "Maedhros alone stood aside". More Silmarillion art to come, yay!

Media: *lists on fingers* Watercolour, Photoshop, Painter 8. Did I leave anything out? *pencil pipes up "me! me! me!"*

Really good Scene Jenny! Are you still colouring these the same way you demonstrated on Epilogue?
:icongold-seven:
Not all the way this time. For such dark pictures, I usually fall more heavily on digital; hard to achieve that in watercolour. :) The basic technique is the same; I then used a couple of multiply layers on Morgoth and the throne, and went over Morgoth in Painter too; he was just too dark initially. ;)

Chaucer: You've probably read my book? The Book of the Duchess? No? Well, it was allegorical.
Roland: Well, we won't hold that against you, that's for every man to decide for himself. (A Knight's Tale)

how very painful - well done :)

Fantastic compo and colors !! :+fav:

That step-by-step you posted really helped me out! I tried the same technique with pencil drawings and used a 'overlay' layer to handle the contrast - it really made a difference to my poor quality scans. I gave Ihsan (Epilogue buddy) a link to your tutorial, he's using the same technique as well now (for traditional work) :)

That's cool! I've often wondered if there are others out there working like that - apart from the ones who've seen my tutorial. The technique is just so simple and yields such great results.
