Maglor is probably one of the saddest characters in the Silmarillion. He was the only one of Feanor's sons who was ever willing to rescind the Oath of Feanor but was still bound by it, and even though he's not a character we ever explicitly learn very much about , it is obvious how much he suffered under the terrible deeds he committed himself for the Oath. I wanted to convey the compassion and the pain and deep sorrow that is Maglor... and try out a green colour scheme for once.
This is perfect, Maglor looks really excellent; his dark hair is alike to Fë anor's, and his eyes are wise but his expression is filled with a hidden sorrow. Really well captured.
His clothes are also really well coloured, such excellent use of hues everywhere; and you mak the material look very real, like satin or some sort of silky cotton. And the way the robes sort of drape him, and look heavy. The designs on the cloth are wonderful too, very ornate and Elven.
Very slender hands and arms too, he looks like he is really adept with that harp (as he was! ).
And that harp! It's really beautiful, definately work of the Eldar. Wonderful designs, and thick shapes but slender. It actually reminded me of Finrod (it is Finrod, right? I always mix up Fë anor's sons ), and his harping for Bëor and his men.
Incredible shadings everytwhere, like his face and neck. Gah.
That background is wonderful too, definately reminds me of some forest in west Beleriand. The leaves and things in the forefront create a great effect too.
This is such a perfect painting.. I'm realy in awe and respect of your work and your devotion to the Silmarillion.
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Sometimes I feel that Maglor was born into the wrong strand of Finwe's line. He would have suited perhaps a son of Fingolfin or Finarfin better, for he was gentler and wiser than his brothers (in my opinion). I think you've drawn his characteristics wonderfully, he looks wan and sad, and terribly burdened. His clothing is exquisitely elvish, and absolutely beautiful. I simple love it. I also admire the background colours to the left of him. That green blue wet-in-wet wash is enchanting in its own right, so rich, deep and lush. It kind of contrasts completely with Maglor himself - as if the world around him is colourful and complete, whereas he is alone, downhearted and empty. This mixture adds so much emotional weight to the scene. On a larger scale, the floating leaves (as opposed to those still on the tree) represent his loss, and almost the death of his spirit. He looks soulless, as if Mandos will soon hold him.
Who knows what became of Maglor? I like to think that he strayed on the beaches of Middle-earth far into the Third Age, and beyond, and that if I were to stroll along a beach myself, I may one day hear the beautiful melancholy displayed in his music, and wonder where the beautiful tunes may be coming from. Ah, the dreamer speaks again!
