Nerdanel the Wise, wife of Fëanor.

I think I've been trying to capture Nerdanel for nearly twenty years, and now I've finally managed to capture her gentleness, her inner strength and her sense of humour - because I always thought that you needed that when you're married to Fëanor for a few thousand years, give birth to no fewer than seven boys, and raise them without any major damage...

Winsor/Newton watercolours on moleskine sketchbook.

More towards the beginning, before Fëanor leads the Noldor into exile.

Very beautiful indeed, but I have a question. I love Tolkien and his books, but I never seem to have came across Nerdanel. I was hoping you tell me is she really in the books and in which one :D

She's the wife of Feanor, and has something like three lines in the entire book ;)

I am delighted that you are on another Silmarillion kick; it inspires me to read the book(s) again. I've always loved Nerdanel, because she was such a strong, steady counterpart to Feanor's intensity. And when he finally became too difficult to deal with, she left him, as well as any elf could without divine intervention. (Oh Tolkien, you Catholic, you.) I once had an idea for a fan fiction that checked in on her some time after the end of the Third Age, but it never got off the ground. Mostly I wanted to explore how the Noldor would have changed over the millenia, in culture and technology.

Forgive my rambling. Seeing your art (I first found you years ago on Elfwood, by the way) brings back the memories. :)

Interesting question, on how much they'd have changed! My take would be that their technology wouldn't have changed at all. Feanor seems to have been the only Elf *ever* to have made revolutionary inventions on any field (writing, arms, armour) and the only one driven enough to desire change. The Noldor, as a whole, seem to be a very reluctant-to-change people. Especially after the trauma of Feanor. ;)
