"But as the host of Fingolfin marched into Mithrim the Sun rose flaming in the West, and Fingolfin unfurled his blue and silver banners, and blew his horns, and flowers sprang beneath his marching feet, and the ages of the stars were ended."
J. R. R. Tolkien: The Silmarillion, Chapter 13: Of the Return of the Noldor
(From left to right: An unnamend banner-bearer; Fingolfin, ready to throttle the first Feanorean to cross his path; Fingon, checking back to see if the host has trouble following; Turgon, lost in grief over his wife Elenwe; Finrod and his sister Galadriel, looking at Middle-earth for the first time in wonder.)
Absolutely astounding. Gold-seven, I totall idolize you. You are a GODESS of watercolour... and your style is so defined. It's.. it's... ah.. I'm going to cry, lol... o.o
Never have I come across a Tolkien-artist who puts such detail history-wise into their work, who adds things which we know are there but which have not been mentioned; not only that, your characters also look exactly as I'm sure many people (myslef anyway) have imagined them, and your absolutely insurmountable skill with watercolours gives us the opportunity to see our ideas and visions manifest. I applaud, praise and adore you.
This painting is one of your best, that I have seen anyway; there is such a strong atmosphere, there is so much subtle emnity; Fingolfin's expression says it all really.
And it's almost uncanny, but these are exactly the faces I have seen for each character in the Silmarillion. Turgon has always, for me, been this sort of 'fatherly king'-looker, with a beard and everything, because of his lordship of Gondolin later on. I know that is a slightly skewed idea, and the one you've given me ere is wonderful as well. And the expression or sheer, downcast grief on his face is perfect, it really reminds me of how I felt when I read of Elenwë's perishing on the Helkaraxë.. I was very bummed after that, for days as I recall. Which is odd, bcause she wasn't even that central a character.. But I really felt for Turgon.
Ahh Galadriel looks perfect, so exactly like my own image. I had even imagined slightly pouted lips! ´This is pretty spooky..
The sun hitting the mountains behind them, and the huge host of Noldor travelling all this long way, really reminds me of the legendary nature of their insane crossing. How brave!
The only little discrepancy, which isn't one as such, is that they all seem to be rather lightly clothed, having just marched across hundreds and hundreds of miles of the Helcaraxë, basically our equivalent of Greenland or even further North.. But by now Fingolfin's host are already in Hithlum, and it isn't quite as cold there.
Well, I don't know what else to say. I love what you have given us all here, with your work, and please continue to do it in the future!! too.
About the clothes: They never thought they would cross the Helcaraxe, so I never thought they'd brought that many warm clothes! Here, I depicted them with all sorts of lighter clothes on top of each other, but as you said, the Helcaraxe was already far behind them. Hithlum was still cool, but no need to bundle up.
