The Darkening of Valinor by Gold-Seven The Darkening of Valinor by Gold-Seven
"Then Fëanor ran from the Ring of Doom, and fled into the night; for his father was dearer to him than the Light of Valinor or the peerless works of his hands; and who among sons, of Elves or of Men, have held their fathers of greater worth?"
J. R. R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion

After Morgoth has destroyed the Two Trees with the help of the spider demon Ungoliant, he slays High King Finwë on his doorstep, and steals the three Silmaril. Fëanor hastens home, to find his father dead and the three priceless jewels he created gone.

Left: Manwë, Nienna, Mandos, Yavanna.

Watercolour, pencil and coloured pencil, on 13x19'' Canson Montval paper. About 20+ hours of work.

A bit of evolution of this piece can be found here. goldseven.wordpress.com/2013/0…

From the look on his face, it's hard to escape the impression that Feanor had been anticipating this loss since the day that his mother went away - yet STILL cannot comprehend it, cannot believe, much less accept what has occurred.

This explains a great deal of what followed, but cannot excuse it.

Dieses Bild ist gleichzeitig imposant und furchtbar tragisch... Feanors Gesichtsausdruck - so sieht jemand aus, dessen Welt gerade in Stücke zerfällt.

Großartige Gesamtkomposition!

Thrilling piece. The sense of doom is strikingly depicted, as if fate was indeed already written. And bravo for the cleverly executed continuity between the frame and the centra panel. Amazing!

Very powerful stuff.  That's one of my favorite bits of The Silmarillion, and this picture conveys the emotion of that moment perfectly.

Ohh, I love it when you go use what I call your "classical palette": varied cool blues with some reddish accents. This is perfect in every way.

This is just heartbreaking. I can't imagine what Feanor must be feeling or thinking.

For some reason, Mandos is the face that really caught my attention.

Awesome. I always found it interesting how Feanor's relationship with his father and brothers have Biblical undertones... I love the expressions here. The Valar look so shaken and Feanor is just so horrified. You can see the wrath but also the pain. And Finwe... Poor Finwe. What else is there to say?

Poor Feanor :C It's easy to forget this moment in all his bloodier more aggressive infamy. I guess death of ones daddy is valid motive for going a tad psycho

I remain in utter awe of your work... This beautifully sensitive image captures the moment before Feanor's wrath blazed up and consumed so much of the world... That stunned, sick feeling of loss and misery before his other emotions perished in the inferno...

Great work, but it brings me down to my old question. In all the writing Tolkien doesn't give the spiders a nice side. Did he hate them so much or are they good evil tools?

I have to say it never even occurred to me to give spiders a nice side... Overall, Tolkien's animal world is extremely black and white. Dogs, eagles, ravens are good, wolves, crows, snakes are evil. It's a typical representation of mythical beasts.

You did it again :-)

Is it Fëanor hastening home?

I like how the crag line behind Feanor echoes Morgoth behind it :) Actually - can say the same for lots of the lines that continue from the centre outwards - the effect is beautiful! Lots of powerful emotion in this.  I always liked this moment in the Silmarilion... and dreaded it too!

Wow.

And so the doom of the Noldor was sealed in the blood of the High King...

It certainly is saying something that Feanor held his father dearer to him than his Silmarils considering all he did afterwards to retrieve them. So very tragic that one so talented was maneuvered into doing so many terrible things, not just for his time but for all middle earth and its peoples afterwards.
