The Oath of Feanor by Gold-Seven The Oath of Feanor by Gold-Seven
"Then Fanor swore a terrible oath. His seven sons leapt straightway to his side and took the selfsame vow together, and red as blood shone their drawn swords in the glare of the torches. They swore an oath which none shall break, and none should take, by the name even of Ilvatar, calling the Everlasting Dark upon them if they kept it not; and Manw they named in witness, and Varda, and the hallowed mountain of Taniquetil, vowing to pursue with vengeance and hatred to the ends of the World Vala, Demon, Elf or Man as yet unborn, or any creature, great or small, good or evil, that time should bring forth unto the end of days, whoso should hold or take or keep a Silmaril from their possession.

Thus spoke Maedhros and Maglor and Celegorm, Curufin and Caranthir, Amrod and Amras, princes of the Noldor; and many quailed to hear the dread words. For so sworn, good or evil, an oath may not be broken, and it shall pursue oathkeeper and oathbreaker to the world's end."

J. R. R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion, Ch. 9: Of the Flight of the Noldor

:deviation: Print available here! [link]

left to right: Amrod and Amras (they're hard to tell apart in this light), Fanor, Curufin (always the first to obey his father), Maglor (not really conviced but caught up in the moment), Maedhros (taking charge of keeping his brothers in line while Atar is busy), Caranthir, Celegorm.

Watercolour and gouache.

Great work.
I really hope the Tolkien Estate eventually allows a series of Silmarillion movies to be made. I can see why their hesitant, but when you rememer such powerful scenes like this one, it would be too fantastic an event to miss out on.

I'm quite glad that this will probably not happen! After the Hobbit, I have lost all the faith in movies that I may have had...

My friend tanikel posted a poll.  "What's your favorite piece of art on DA?"…

I picked this one.  If the had let us pick two, "The oath has been awakened" would have been the other since the prints hang side by side in my living room.

(Do check out Kristina's gallery.  She's a US Army "combat camera", and a superb one.)

How much would you charge for work like this? How long would it take to complete?

I'm not taking commissions at the moment, I'm afraid - work on my illustrated novel is keeping me busy, probably until the end of the year. Something like this would take several weeks, perhaps months, and the pay would be four-digit. ;)

Love the perspective (looking up at their faces) in this one. Also I love the red tint. It makes me think of blood, both in the sense of their family ties as brothers, and also of all the bloodshed that will come of this oath!

I re-read the Silmarillion right now, and now I found this awesome illustration.
I like that you can actually tell them apart since there are so many of them, and I also love the dynamic this moment has - all of them draw their swords, and there is no doubt that they will fall into Feanors words in the heat of the moment.
