Ladies and Gentlemen - the results are here! Many thanks go to Saimain for her input during the judging. For the contest criteria and the judging method I used, please scroll down to beneath the entries. I'm extremely happy and proud to present...

:winner: First place :winner:

Rhys ab Huw... by Tanja-A

"Rhys ab Huw" by Tanja-A
A stunning piece with a strong composition and a lot of movement, anatomy as flawless as you can get, and beautiful rendering on horse* and rider alike - this piece just stands out a mile. Even if it's not a scene, the rest was so beautiful that it still managed to finish ahead of the competition. Congrats to Selena!!
*The horse's rump may be a tad long, but that doesn't take away from the piece for me.

Second place

Training by DrawnSeawards

"Training" by DrawnSeawards
I immediately fell in love with the character portrayal here, the interaction of the three, the composition and placement of the figures, a strong grasp of anatomy, and a really nice watercolour technique. This picture just tells a story, and what makes it more appealing is that this story was told entirely by the artist - but still very close to my perception of the characters. Kudos!

Third place

We have a tie in third place!

:thumb77448945: and Stop Staring and Run by Deisi

"To Tangnafedd" by Toradh and "Stop staring and run!" by Deisi.

"To Tangnafedd" captures beautifully Llywelyn's long, lonely journey home through a country that is as beautiful as it is wild. The composition, again, really sets off the solitary boy and his horse against the misty countryside. The weariness in the horse's stance stands in contrast with the determination in Llywelyn's eyes.

"Stop staring and run!" might have come straight from my imagination of the scene it portrays. Deisi conveys a great sense of urgency and drama with the fire highlighting the characters. And yes, an extra point was awarded for Branwyn's bare feet. :D

Fourth place

We have a massive tie here. Guys, you absolutely had to make it this difficult, didn't you?

Branwyn's escape by Araniel "Branwyn's escape" by Araniel
:thumb79419604: "Branwyn" by Nelleke
:thumb75891890: "Cystadleuaeth Darn" by rosesmusings
'You've found him' by Qitian "You've found him" by Qitian

"Branwyn's escape" scored just a little higher than Araniel's other entry,… , for the neat composition with the Welsh poem in the background, and I just loved the stilistic elements here, all adding to the wistfulness of the scene. Other strong points in favour of this piece are the earthy colours, the very cool lineart style and the colouring, which is a great mix of digital and traditional.

"Branwyn" features a scantily clad Branwyn and a just as scantily clad Gwaedoc ab Yraedoc, some very strong anatomy (no pun intended) and a great use of coloured pencils. There's some very nice medieval architecture/ornaments there too, with the window embrasure and the carved bedposts. Let's overlook Branwyn's less than medieval lingerie - I allowed more leeway for Branwyn's clothes because I usually draw her not strictly medieval either.

"Cystadleuaeth Darn" (say this five times!) means "Contest Entry" in Welsh. I admit I was tempted to give extra points for the use of Welsh, but then decided it wouldn't be fair. ;) So the extra points went to the extremely original and fun concept of a painting within a painting, the great use of a medieval painting style, and the looks on the faces of Aidan and Llywelyn - and the discrepancies between what the medieval artist painted and what he saw!

"You've found him", finally, depicts one of the opening scenes in the story, Aidan and Rhys finding a dead soldier in the forest. The composition in this one works really well to dwarf the two boys and their find, and the colours make this very cold and foreboding. The look on Rhys's face is just perfect as well!

So, this were the entries that will receive prize sketches/prints! Remember that I extended the prize region to fourth place - so all these four will get a sketch commission from me as well.

A word on judging
My main categories for judging were:
- Composition (8)
- Setting/background (blank white vs detailed setting) (8)
- Use of medium (6)
- Anatomy (didn't have to be perfect, but needed to look fitting) (6)
- Originality (Head shots vs full, original scenes etc) (6)
- Character portrayal (I mostly went with the feel of the character, most received default top score here) (6)

I awarded points between 0 and 8 for these categories, but I don't think anyone received less than 2 or 3 in any given category. So every entry scored a rank of a maximum of 40 points altogether. Once I had that score, I still did some shifting, because taste can't be explained by points alone and some entries just had deserved better than the pints they received. Saimain helped straightening out the top ten, but generally, we were pretty much in agreement overall.

Honourable Mention

These have been a lot of entries that I enjoyed far more than is reflected above - I'll only pick one of them as an "Honourable Mention" to round off this journal entry, and that's "Second thoughts"by Birgitte-Gustavsen. I just was flabbergasted at seeing a contest entry that had showed more insight into the (minor) characters than I'd had myself! ;P

That said, here goes another huge thank you for all of you who entered! Those of you who have won a commission (places 1 to 4) and/or a print (1-3): I won't be able to get to the pictures until mid or late April if everything goes well; feel free to think of things for me to draw and discuss them with me. But I'll note you when I'm ready to get to your picture anyway, of course. :)

O.o I won something? Eeeee! *bounce*
Thank you so much for actually liking my stuff!

Congratulations to the others, too!

And don't worry about having no time for the prizes - personally I have no idea what to ask for, so having another month to meditate on that is quite useful ;)
Uneide Featured By Owner Mar 24, 2008
Woo, I guessed first place! For me it was just how dynamic it was + horse. Heh. XD Congrats my dear, you got many beautiful entries! :)

Congratulations to the winners! :w00t:

Wonderful contest with amazing results. And I think it was great of you to rank all the entries, not just the first three and provide reasons and critiques as well.

All these people spent so much time on the entries... I just felt I owed them more than a "Here's first, second and third, congrats everyone". Initially, I was going to give in-depth comments on all of them - back when I thought I'd maybe get ten or twelve entries. @_@

Yeah, the response was stunning! Shows how everyone loves your art and identifies with your storytelling!

Ein bißchen traurig bin ich vielleicht schon weil ich doch sehr weit hinten gelandet bin. Aber die sieben ist eh meine glückszahl, also vielleicht war es schicksal. ^^;
Congratz everyone!

Congratulations everyone!

Congratulations to the winners!
